Tour description: Live it, Love it, Save it
- Luxury 50 foot Yacht Nautilus for 30+ hours, to next day mid-afternoon, departure from Waikiki early am, return afternoon the next day.
- Track for False Killer Whales enroute to swim with spinner dolphins
- Hawaii has a genetically distinct, nearshore, pod of resident False Killer Whales. This population of unique marine mammals has been decimated over the past 20 years. Ground-breaking research is shedding light on their distribution throughout Hawaii waters. Tracking their preferred depths and shores over a regular basis helps these conservation efforts by supplying photo identification and sighting data.
- Sightings of spotted, roughtooth, and bottlenose dolphins are common over the spring, summer and fall months. Light winds and calm waters allow us to access offshore waters for pilot whales and their larger cousins.
- Sightings of spinner dolphins - known for their accepting nature towards humans being in the water near them - are virtually guaranteed.
- Overnight, in secluded dolphin bay - or follow the dolphins into their nighttime feeding grounds, if the moon is right. Drop in the onboard hydrophone to hear the cacophony of dolphin vocalization as they orchestrate hunting strategies.
- Wild Side's signature dolphin swim experience, usually on multiple occasions and with differing species per adventure. Snorkeling coral reefs with green sea turtles and brilliant tropical fish, is an added bonus.
- Sun, excitement, salt water, ocean breezes, dolphins (they're free) and awesome experiences.
The Experience:
Flexible itineraries maximize each day's experience. Marine Biologist crew, enroute narration on behavior and identification of wildlife encountered, along with biological, ecological, or cultural significance's of wildlife and locales. Join the Captain in the flybridge for initial sightings and first-hand updates. Non-invasive data gathered is shared with the Wild Dolphin Foundation, Cascadia Research Hawaii Project, or Coral Reef Monitoring Data Portal. Snorkel equipment, and floatation devices are included.
We leave Kewalo Basin Harbor at 7:30 am, and often spot the "ambassadors of aloha" (dolphins) upon leaving. We will usually work our way towards the secluded, sheltered bays of the west coast. With the help of pelagic birds and waypoints of previous sightings, its common to encounter and interact with various species of dolphins or whales along the way. There's always time for a snorkeling visit with the ancient mariner's of the sea, the green sea turtles.
Fresh caught dinner, hot showers with pampering hair and skin products, sleeping under the stars (or in private stateroom or bunks) - narration of night skies included and meteor showers are all summer long. There's nothing like waking up to the beauty of sunrise over our favorite valley, which doubles as a daytime resting ground for the Hawaiian spinner dolphins. By the time we are done with breakfast, splashing has announced the spinner dolphin pod's arrival, and its back in the water for us...
The return trip begins mid-morning or afternoon, leaving us time for any additional dolphin encounters. Remember, the journey isn't over until we are back at the dock.
